Ōpōtiki District Council’s Engineering Services Group Manager, Stace Lewer asked people to take care at the upper end of Church Street (near ITM) on Saturday this week as contractors will be removing several trees that are causing issues with pipes and roading in the area.
“We have been in touch with the businesses along that stretch so that they know what’s going on and they can keep people and vehicles away from the area on Saturday.
“There are several large Plane trees and their roots are causing damage to the roading and pavement which makes it dangerous and difficult for people using the footpaths. Road realignment wasn’t a viable option in that area so the trees will need to be removed before the road is resealed this summer. The trees will be cut down and stumps removed so that we can replace the kerb and channel before the full reseal early next year.
“There are several smaller trees and a Pohutukawa which are staying in front of ITM and the gym – their roots are not causing any issues in those locations.
“Please take extra care in the area and avoid the marked areas where the contractors are working,” Mr Lewer said.
