Heavy rain update - Wednesday 27 September 2023 - 4pm
Te Kaha – Boil Water Notice (now cancelled see update for Monday 2 October)
Staff have been busy on site, undertaking extra maintenance after the heavy rainfall over the last few days caused the supply to return a positive e-coli reading. The plant is now running well but 3 clear results need to be returned before it is deemed safe, so it will be Monday 2 October at the earliest, before the boil water notice can be lifted. We will keep you updated, and let you know immediately once this happens. For now – please continue to boil water for 2 minutes before use for drinking, cooking and brushing your teeth.
Solid Waste
Rubbish collections will continue as normal. The RRC will be closed on Thursday 28 September due to flooding having blocked the entrance. It will reopen on Friday 29 September. Coastal RRC’s are going to be at capacity without access to remove rubbish due to road closures - if those on the Coast can hold back waste from the Waihau Bay and Te Kaha RRC that will help us manage the situation.
Stormwater
Stormwater is slowly receding to the southern end of town, however, it may take a few days to clear completely. BOPRC are providing an additional pump to help clear what is left.
Wastewater
The system is recovering, however, it’s still under pressure. Most homes are now flushing away, but we ask that people still limit their use to necessary only (toilets and washing) to help us manage the situation.
Roading
You can view and keep track of the local road updates here.
Last but definitely not least, we want to express our empathy to those who are still being affected by the floods, and our gratitude to everyone in the community for coming together and supporting each other. Make sure you check in on your friends, whānau and neighbours 💚

Heavy rain update – Tuesday, 26 September 2023 - 5pm
WASTEWATER
We have experienced significant rainfall over the past 24 hours and that has had impacts on our Stormwater and Wastewater networks. This means some residents may not be able to use their toilets, showers, and sinks.
Council has placed portaloos at Rawinia Rangi Reserve.
If you can avoid unnecessary discharge of wastewater during these times it will help the network recover faster. Please go easy on flushing, showers and use of washing machines and dishwashers.
ROADING
If you have to travel today please take extra care and let us know of any issues.
You can check the status of local roads on our website here.
You can check the status of State Highways here.
RIVERS AND STREAMS
These are monitored by the Regional Council flood team. Flooding of the berms alongside rivers and streams is expected. It is not expected to impact flood defences such as stopbanks. Ponding has occured in low lying areas on floodplains which is the norm for the amount of rainfall received.
WATER SUPPLY
Due to heavy rainfall, a boil water notice has been issued for residents connected to the Te Kaha water supply network after a positive reading for e-coli has been received.
If your property is connected to the Te Kaha network please make sure to bring water to a rolling boil and boil for at least two minutes before drinking, cooking, washing teeth etc.
Staff have been busy on site undertaking extra maintenance and the plant is now running but we need 3 clear results to be returned so it will be at least Monday 2 October before the boil water notice can be lifted. We’ll let you know once that happens.
