The area has been reopened to the public and tables, chairs and other features are due to be installed soon with other amenities being considered for future.
There is a new fence along the boundary of the retaining wall at the new water's edge. Council was required under the current building code to install the fence to protect people from 'falls from height' and to discourage jumping. The bit that has been fenced is quite shallow at low tide. There are remnants of the even older 1904 timber wharf and rock embankment in places that were unable to be removed that could cause injury if someone was to fall or jump. We've installed signs on the fence warning everyone not to jump from this area.
The fence has been made so that it can be removed during large flooding events. That also means it can be removed and reused elsewhere when the reconstruction of the wharf takes place.
