Get information and support before nominations open
While nominations for this year's local council elections don't open until 19 July 2019, Council encourages potential candidates to start thinking early about their future in local government.
Having the support and information needed ahead of the election will help ensure elected representatives understand the responsibilities and accountability of the role and have the abilities, skills and training needed to be effective elected members who are aware of the impact of their decision-making.
Holding public office requires a serious commitment but can be an opportunity to take a step up and have real influence over the key issues affecting whanau, friends and communities. It is also an excellent way to further develop leadership skills.
As an elected member, you will:
- be involved in governance
- help manage our assets, worth over $200 million
- help prioritise spending
- make decisions that will shape the future of our communities
- help achieve economic growth
- decide how to meet the current and future needs of Opotiki's communities for infrastructure, public services and regulations while balancing affordability for today's ratepayers and future generations.
Being chosen by fellow citizens to represent them is a privilege. Successful local election candidates are those that take the time to listen to their communities, engage with the people within them and go on to champion their voice as their representative.
