Our year on a page
An overview of Ōpōtiki District Council's 2018/19 year is now available. The Annual Report and summary provide an overview of activities and is a good opportunity for residents to review Council performance in the past year.
Ōpōtiki Mayor, Lyn Riesterer, is pleased to see the year's outcomes laid out in an easy-to-understand way and hopes it will encourage people to get involved and look more deeply into council's activities.
"I am really proud of what we achieved together last year - we have hit some great milestones and made some improvements that will be felt for generations. We look after $212million in assets for our community so I think it's important that the community has the opportunity to look into how well we are doing that.
"Some of these things can just slip by without much public thought. Wastewater pipes are all underground so we hardly give them a thought until things go wrong! This report shows us that we have successfully completed year two of our huge wastewater rehabilitation project. What we get as a community is a better sewer network for years to come (so we can go back to not thinking about the pipes under the ground!)
"I am also thrilled to see planning for climate change built into our water and wastewater systems. In the past year we voted to declare a climate change emergency and add our voice to the chorus calling for systemic and individual change. Our own work backs that up.
"The report also shows that we are delivering our projects on time and under budget. We will continue to focus on the value we add for our community while managing the costs that the community carries to do so.
"I'd also like to thank the community for continuing to really engage with council on all sorts of matters. We had twice as many submissions during the Long Term Plan process as we have had before. I think that shows that our move to providing an online option is being embraced by the community.
"Please keep up these conversations with council through formal channels like submissions, or just chatting with your councillors, having a kōrero on the Council Facebook page, or picking up the phone. That's what your councillors are here for," Mayor Riesterer said.
