Ki o Rahi (Māori traditional sport) for everyone

This Matariki, Ōpōtiki is hosting 11 days of events and activities for the whole family. And one of the gems in the crown is the Ki o Rahi Whānau Fun Day at Memorial Park on Thursday 23 June.

Ōpōtiki District Council’s Events and i-SITE Manager, Joseph Hayes, said that there would be plenty to do including Blue Light’s giant blow up obstacle course, information tents from Whakatōhea Māori Trust Board, Whakaatu Whanaunga Trust and Healthy Families and a free sausage sizzle.

But he was particularly excited to offer an opportunity for everyone to take part and learn how to play Ki o Rahi.

“We’ll have a special area set up for people to learn and take part in this really fun and fast-paced taonga tākaro (traditional Māori game). It’s a ball game played on a circular field and I’ve heard it described as a combination of netball, handball and rippa rugby. It is easy to learn and a lot of fun!” Mr Hayes said.

Joseph also said that if you wanted to watch the game played competitively, or if you are just more of a spectator, then the Eastern Bay Schools Ki o Rahi Tournament will also be taking place during the day.

“The tournament is being coordinated and run by EBOP Interschool Sports Coordinator Katrina Anderson, Sport BOP’s Rangatahi Māori Lead Devena Ruwhiu-Edmonds,and Mataatua Sports Coordinator Mikaere Johnson. We are so thrilled to be able to be part of the crowds enjoying the revival of this unique sport,” Mr Hayes said.
