Big prizes up for grabs at Matariki skate extravaganza

As part of Ōpōtiki’s 11 days of Matariki events, there is a Matariki Skate Park Party and Competition this coming Sunday with more than $3000 of prizes and giveaways on offer.

The Ōpōtiki District Council’s events and i-SITE team have partnered with Kia Whakawhirinaki Rangatahi, a committed collective of Ōpōtiki Youth who are leading the organisation and running of this event.

Kanoa Rewiri from Kia Whakawhirinaki Rangatahi, said that it was going to be an huge event for skaters in Ōpōtiki and surrounding districts, offering an invitation for others to come from even further afield to test their skills in Ōpōtiki’s new skatepark.

“There will be activities for all ages – bouncy castles for the little ones and food trucks and hauora wellbeing tents. We will set up a sound stage in the middle of the skatepark and the event finishes with a laser light show run by Flying Pictures.

“The prizes are awesome as well including skate gear, decks and beanies. We have good helmets as well, sponsored by ACC to help keep heads safe too,” Kanoa said.

When: Sunday 19 June 2022, 2pm - 6pm (competition starts at 2pm with juniors and open divisions)
