Last month, a class from Waiotahe Valley School visited Ōpōtiki District Council chambers for an interview with the mayor and an opportunity to find out more about what a mayor does and the sorts of issues council discusses.
The class had recently been learning about the council and even ran their own campaign to vote for a mayor.
Ōpōtiki Mayor, David Moore, said that it was a great experience to welcome the students and talk to them about his job.
“Young Korbin was voted mayor by his classmates and he ran an excellent campaign promising free trampolines throughout the town.
“It was a popular campaign promise, and it was a fun way to talk about the sorts of things that councillors and I need to make decisions on in real life, where we get our funding from, and the challenges we face.
“We have a large map on the wall of the council chambers and for the students it was impressive to see just how big our district is and the amount of land it covers. They had great questions about who fixes potholes, who is responsible for homelessness and building more houses, and what the biggest challenge has been for me as mayor so far.
“I was really impressed and enjoyed my time with the students. I might have a future mayoral challenger if this trampoline idea takes off!” Mayor Moore said.
