Recreational boat users and general users of the Ōpōtiki Wharf can expect more trailer carparking spaces this summer season as work begins on a carparking overflow area, adjacent to the Ōpōtiki Coastguard building.
Ōpōtiki District Council’s, Operations Manager, Parks, Reserves, and Harbour, Garry Page, said a section of land to the north side of the Coastguard building will be graded to remove the top layer of muddy soil, in preparation for the laying and spreading of gravel.
“Because of the mud and moisture, parking in this spot, over the years has been really limited, particularly in winter and wet periods. By applying the river metal, parking will be available all year round,” Mr Page said.
With a limited main parking area, the new overflow section will provide more spaces for more people.
“Grading of the land is scheduled to begin on Monday 9 December with an ‘all things going well’ completion date of the 12 December 2024,” Mr Page said.
