Enrolling and voting
Local government shapes where you live. It's the footpaths you walk on, the roads you drive on, the water your drink, and the parks and libraries you enjoy. It's also about culture, community events, economic development and much more. If these things matter to you, vote in Local Elections.
VOTING CLOSED IN THE 2022 LOCAL ELECTIONS AT MIDDAY SATURDAY 8 OCTOBER
FINAL RESULTS ARE NOW AVAILABLE
Māori Wards Poll
In addition to the above election, a non-binding poll of electors was held on whether Māori wards should be established for the Ōpōtiki District Council in addition to the current general wards in future council elections.
Members of Māori wards would be elected by people who are enrolled on the Māori Parliamentary Electoral Roll. Electors of Māori wards would not be able to vote for members of general wards. Similarly, people who are enrolled on the General Parliamentary Electoral Roll would vote for members of the general wards, but not for members of Māori wards. All electors would still vote for the mayor and community board members.
Council will now undertake a detailed review of its representation arrangements including the number of General and Māori wards, the number of councillors and ward boundaries and names. This will go through a full public consultation so that final outcomes can be in place for the 2025 local government elections.
