2023 - Ōpōtiki District Council Interim Speed Management Plan 2023

Thanks to everyone who engaged with us and made submissions on this plan. The consultation is complete and on the 1st of August, council deliberated and adopted the plan in full, approving safer speeds around the network. The plan was sent to the director of land transport for certification. The plan was certified on 20 September 2023.

The feedback period has now closed.

As part of the National Road Safety Strategy – the Road to Zero, central government has introduced new legislation and guidance which required us to change the way we set & manage speed limits on our roads, through the development and implementation of a Speed Management Plan.

This was a great opportunity to improve on the poor road safety statistics in our district, where we sit among the most at-risk communities in the country.

Feedback

The feedback period closed 5pm, 21 July 2023. We accepted feedback online, by post, over the counter, email, in person at our drop in sessions. We also provided the community the opportunity to call and speak with our team directly if they required further information and we spoke directly with key stakeholders.

What comes next?

Over the following year we'll implement the adopted changes.

Next, we’ll be working with our neighbouring councils across the Bay to develop a regional Speed Management Plan, which will set forward a transition to safer speed limits across the district over 10 years from July 2024.
